The grade 8s had an amazing time at Camp Olympia! We had great weather and we stepped outside our comfort zone by trying many things we had never done before: The Giant Swing, Zip Line, High Ropes, & 'Bouldering'. Even familiar things like campfire songs, basketball or just hanging out during moments of free time were a wonderful way to spend our last few days as Jaguars! Thanks to Mlle Spilkin, Ms Hanley, Ms Ferreira, Mr Gillespie and Mr Jones for taking care of us.

Our grade 8 graduation takes place on Tuesday 25th June. The ceremony starts at 5.30pm however students should be dropped off at the school at 5pm. Tickets for the ceremony will be coming home with your student today. Permission forms to leave early on the day of the grad and for late arrival the next day went home last week; please make sure to send these Signed forms back to school if you have not already done so.

In celebration of Canada Day we are having a RED and WHITE day on Thursday June 27th. If you child has some red or white in their closet, plan on wearing it on the 27th!

A reminder from School Council: we are still accepting items for the Fall Fun Fair basket auction. Please bring in a NEW item to fill your class basket. See the last page of this newsletter for the class themes.

Reminder to all parents that the last day for Lunch Lady is Wednesday June 26th. The last day for Pizza is Monday 24th June.

Lost and found will be donated to charity on Thursday 27th June - please make sure to remind your child to check for any missing items of clothing/water bottles etc before this date. Lost and found can be located in the office.

Unless otherwise directed by parents, students who have medication at school will be bringing it home on the last day of school. If you are leaving early for your summer vacation, please make sure that you have collected your child’s medication prior to your departure.

Thank you and best wishes to the following staff:

  • Ms Davies who is retiring at the end of this year.  We thank you for many years of artful inspiration.

  • Ms Ryatt is going on an educational leave.

  • Ms Morra, Ms O’Grady are going on parental leaves.

JWH Weekly Update

June 3rd - 7th, 2019

Friday, June 7th is a PA Day! There is no school for students!

On Tuesday 4th June, JWH will be celebrating our wonderful volunteers at a ‘Volunteer Tea’ being held in the library between 10.30 and 11.30am. All are welcome!

Plan on coming for a wonderful array of goodies as well as entertainment provided by our talented students.

During the month of June displaying the rainbow flag in Halton schools is a symbol of support and recognition of LGBTQ+ peoples in our Board community and also a show of support to those who have family and friends who identify as LGBTQ+.  JWH will be displaying the rainbow flag symbolizing that our schools are safe, respectful and welcoming environments where our students and staff who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and all LGBTQ+ people are able to learn, grow, and succeed together.

A reminder to all parents that James W Hill is a walking school!

If you must drive, please be considerate of our special needs buses and other drivers. The painted hash marked section in the front of the school is for school busses only.  Secondly, the front driveway is a fire route and must not be blocked at anytime, including school dismissal time. Please do NOT double park or leave your car anywhere in the school driveway. We want our  students to remain safe at all times. Staff on duty are there to ensure student safety and not to monitor traffic. Thank you for your cooperation.

Warm Weather and Tick Precautions

The warm weather brings an increase in the activity level of adult ticks across Halton Region. Information from the Halton Region website  provides recommendations for anyone taking part in outdoor activities in wooded areas or fields with long grassy areas, in order to minimize and detect exposure to ticks.

Wear:

  • light-coloured clothing, so it’s easier to see ticks

  • closed-toed shoes

  • long-sleeved shirts

  • long pants, tucked into your socks

After being outdoors, check for ticks on yourself and your children. Look:

  • behind your knees

  • on your head

  • in your belly button

  • in your groin area

  • in your underarm area

  • on the back of your body – use a mirror, or ask someone to check for you

Should you find a tick on you or your child, please follow these steps to remove and submit the tick to Halton Region for testing.

Just a reminder that the entry bell is 8.45am! Students should be on the blacktop lined up with their friends ready to enter the school when the bell rings. Children who are late on a regular basis miss important learning time and may also impact the learning of their peers when they disrupt their class by arriving late. Please review how you can best help your child arrive on time and ready to learn. Thank you.
