JWH Weekly Update

December 3 - 7, 2018

The Second Session of PIZZA DAY starts this Monday, December 3! Please ensure that if you did not place an order for your child for this session, that you send in a lunch for them. We also ask that you let your child know if they are not getting pizza for this session to avoid confusion. Thank you!

The Grade 2 French Immersion parent Information night being held in Oakville will take place at Garth Webb S.S., 2820 West Oak Trails. It takes place on Tuesday, December 4, between 6 - 7 pm. This is a great opportunity for parents to understand how a full day immersion program works.

Books, books and more books! There are only a few days left until our Scholastic Book Fair. On Monday, December 3 and Tuesday, December 4 students will have a chance to browse through an awesome collection of books, posters and much more. After making a wish list they can come back and buy something on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of that week. Parents are welcome to pop in as well between 9 and 3:15. Please counsel your children to keep their money in a safe place and to spend it wisely!

The grade 8 Camp Olympia Trip parent information evening will take place on Wednesday, December 5 at 6 pm in the gymnasium. Parents and students are welcome to attend. The trip package will be handed out during this session. For parents who are unable to attend the information session, the trip package will be given to your grade 8 child the following day.

Our Winter Concert will take place on Wednesday, December 12 at 6:30 pm. Our grade 1s through grade 5 have been working hard on their class performances. Under the wonderful direction of Ms. White, the Jazz Band, Intermediate Choir, and Concert Band will also perform. Continuing the “picnic style” tradition of sitting on the gym floor, there will be a few chairs set up for those who need them!

Look for a flyer that will be e-mailed to you next week with regard to our Food4Kids donation campaign. The campaign will run for three days; Monday, December 10, through Wednesday, December 12. The campaign will end with the donations that may be dropped off at the Winter Concert. The flyer will outline the types of food donations that the Food4Kids program uses.

There have been some coyote sightings near the school grounds and the forested area beside them. Like anything in the wild, coyotes should be respected, however, the chance of a negative encounter is extremely low. Research that examined ten years of reports indicated that an average of 2.4 people per year were scratched or bitten by coyotes in Canada. The following statistics are provided for comparison of risk of coyote attack relative to other daily risks in Canada (Statistics Canada 2009): •Over 460,000 dog bites per year •200 people per year struck by lightning. For more information click on the link from the Town of Oakville on ‘Living with Coyotes’.

A reminder to parents that fast food should not be brought or delivered to the school for your child’s lunch or snack since we cannot know whether these foods contain allergens that may put our anaphylactic students at risk. The food programs that our school council sources are screened specifically for all nut allergens. Thank you for helping keep all our students safe.

During the last 2 to 3 weeks we have had many parent visitors to the school. If you are visiting, please DO NOT use our student washrooms. There are staff washrooms on each floor and one in the office that adult visitors are free to use. Our students do not expect to see an adult in their private washrooms!
