JWH Weekly Update

November 26 - 30, 2018

A new PIZZA ordering period is now available on SchoolCashOnline. The next session runs from December 3 to February 4, 2019. The FIRM deadline for ordering pizza for the next session is Tuesday, November 27. The current session finishes on Monday, November 26.

The Grade 2 French Immersion parent Information night being held in Oakville will take place at Garth Webb S.S., 2820 West Oak Trails. It takes place on Tuesday, December 4, between 6 - 7 pm. This is a great opportunity for parents to understand how a full day immersion program works.

During the week of November 26 to November 30, JWH students will talk at length about anti-bullying. Each class will explore activities surrounding what bullying means and how to stop it. Younger students will read the book I am Human, by Susan Verde. Click on the link provided on the cover e-mail to view the book and read it with your child.

On Wednesday, November 28, Hands on Exotics will be visiting the school to introduce our Kindergarten students to the wonderful world of exotic animals. Hands on Exotics is an animal shelter which specializes in the care of exotic animals (i.e. animals other than cats and dogs). The histories of their animals are varied but the vast majority of them started out as pets living in private homes until their owners could no longer take care of them and asked the shelter to take them in. The program will run from 9 am to 1 pm in the Library.

Just in time for the holidays, JWH will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair! It will run from Monday, December 3 to Friday, December 7. A flyer will head home with your child on Monday. During the first two days of the book fair, each class will have an opportunity to preview the book fair during which students may prepare “wish lists”. Later in the week, students will be able to purchase items.

Parents! Once again we are asking that you please take a moment to check the weather before sending your child to school. As the temperatures drop, your child needs to be dressed appropriately to spend a minimum of two, twenty-minute sessions outdoors. Many of our students are not dressing warmly enough, particularly if they also walk to and from school.

There have been some coyote sightings near the school grounds and the forested area beside them. Like anything in the wild, coyotes should be respected, however, the chance of a negative encounter is extremely low. Research that examined ten years of reports indicated that an average of 2.4 people per year were scratched or bitten by coyotes in Canada. The following statistics are provided for comparison of risk of coyote attack relative to other daily risks in Canada (Statistics Canada 2009): •Over 460,000 dog bites per year •200 people per year struck by lightning. For more information click on the link from the Town of Oakville on ‘Living with Coyotes’.
